Red Hand Day – Against the deployment of child soldiers

Posted on

It is estimated that around a quarter of a million children from across the world are deployed as soldiers. Red Hand Day, a campaign setup to draw attention to this abuse is hyped up each year on the 12th of February, and this year we took part in this awareness initiative.

At IBB Hotel Collection, for every employee, we donated €10 to Terre des Hommes, the affiliated charity associated with the campaign.

We also united with others across the world, with our team members from across all our hotels painting their hand red in order to create more awareness on the campaign.“We join others from across the world and call for an immediate end to the recruitment and use of innocent children as soldiers or for any other conflict-related role,’’ said Anuschka von der Heyden as Head of Sustainability. “It is unacceptable and unthinkable that girls and boys continue to serve on the frontlines of a conflict they did not start.”

About Red Hand Day

Red Hand Day comes every year on the 12th of February and the campaign draws attention to the world to stop the use of child soldiers. The campaign, which has been setup in 2004, showcases hundreds and thousands of handprints which are collected each year in more than 50 countries and handed over to politicians and to responsible parties, including the United Nations.

Children, youths and adults around the world have collected more than 300,000 red handprints since the Red Hand Day Campaign was launched in 2004, more than a third of them in Germany, and we will be joining them this year to create more awareness on the campaign.

Will you be participating?

It’s very easy to participate in the campaign, whether at work, schools, in the cities you live in, or through social media. The more people everywhere take part, the more attention the campaign will get.

Our pledge to sustainability

Each month, at IBB Hotel Collection we will be promoting an eco-action. We started the year with Veganuary, a plant-based revolution that advocates for more people and businesses to embrace a lifestyle that involves the consumption of less animal products.

We want 60% of all our meal options across our IBB hotels in Europe, as well as our Cugó Gran brand, to be vegan and vegetarian as of 2024.

We want to make a positive impact, and let our actions speak for themselves. We are excited to make this happen and look forward to looking back at this moment a year from now to see how far we have come.
